Judgment comes in many forms — some obvious, others subtle —

but all can shape how we see others and ourselves. Understanding these types of judgment is the first step toward recognizing and challenging them.

Feeling judged or misread? You’re not alone. Over 70% of people say they’ve been judged on appearance or status, and more than 60% report experiencing stereotypes tied to race, gender, or religion.

Snap judgments happen in fractions of a second:

but together, we can slow down and truly see each other.

When you wear MISRD gear, you’re not just challenging judgment —

you’re signaling to others who’ve felt misread that they’re not alone.

🟥 TYPES OF JUDGMENT

Appearance-Based

What it is: Judging people by how they look — their clothes, hairstyle, body type, tattoos, or other outward features.
Why it’s harmful: Appearance-based judgments reinforce superficial stereotypes, fuel insecurity, and exclude people based on how they look rather than who they are.

Socioeconomic

What it is: Making assumptions based on someone’s income, job, education level, or possessions.
Why it’s harmful: Socioeconomic judgments create barriers, perpetuate classism, and can make people feel trapped or shamed for their circumstances.

Cultural & Racial

What it is: Stereotyping or making assumptions based on someone’s race, ethnicity, nationality, accent, or cultural practices.
Why it’s harmful: Cultural and racial judgments perpetuate racism and xenophobia, limiting opportunities and causing lasting harm.

Ability

What it is: Judging those with physical disabilities, mental health conditions, or neurodivergent differences — often by assuming incompetence or pitying them.
Why it’s harmful: Ability judgments isolate and marginalize people, making them feel lesser or unwelcome.

Gender & Sexuality

What it is: Making assumptions or passing judgment on someone based on their gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
Why it’s harmful: These judgments can lead to harassment, exclusion, and discrimination, and cause people to hide their true selves.

Religious

What it is: Judging someone based on their beliefs, faith practices, or lack of belief.
Why it’s harmful: Religious judgments can divide communities, fuel prejudice, and lead to violence.

Age

What it is: Making assumptions based on someone’s age, whether they’re younger or older.
Why it’s harmful: Age-based judgments fuel ageism, limit opportunities, and diminish the value of people’s unique perspectives.

Mental Health

What it is: Judging someone for having a mental health condition or struggling emotionally.
Why it’s harmful: Mental health judgments reinforce stigma and discourage people from seeking help.

Family & Relationship

What it is: Judging people based on their family status, parenting choices, or relationship situation.
Why it’s harmful: These judgments can isolate and shame people, adding stress or guilt to already challenging situations.

Career & Passion

What it is: Judging someone based on what they do (or don’t do) for a living, or what they’re passionate about.
Why it’s harmful: These judgments limit people’s sense of worth and discourage them from following their passions.

Challenging Judgment, Together

These are just some of the many ways people are misread and judged.

Judgment is complex, personal, and often hidden.

Recognizing it is only the first step.

Together, we can challenge every form of judgment — even the ones we haven’t named yet — by choosing curiosity over assumptions and seeing each other for who we truly are.

If you’ve experienced a type of judgment we haven’t covered, or have a story to share, we invite you to share your story — because every experience matters, and every voice helps us create a world where judgment loses its power.
